The challenge

Adferiad Recovery was formed through the merger of three leading Welsh charities CAIS, Hafal, and WCADA, each with its own IT systems, email platforms, telephony solutions, and security setups. The challenge was to unify these disparate environments into a single, secure, and futureproof IT platform without disrupting day-to-day operations.

The charity handles highly sensitive data across mental health, substance abuse, housing, and criminal justice services, making security and compliance paramount. Adferiad set a clear goal: achieve Cyber Essentials Plus certification, reduce cybersecurity risk, and ensure robust protection for confidential information.

Additionally, the new solution needed to support hybrid working across multiple offices in Wales, provide secure remote access, and deliver value for money as a cost-conscious organisation.

Our approach

Novem (Risc IT) acted as Adferiad’s Managed Service Provider and virtual CIO, delivering a comprehensive IT transformation in three key strands:

  • Productivity: Migrated all users to Microsoft 365, providing Outlook, Teams, and Office apps for seamless collaboration. Implemented SharePoint as a secure intranet and document repository, protected by Azure AD Premium, MFA, and Conditional Access policies. Enabled Teams Telephony for helpline services and deployed Intune for secure device management and app deployment.
  • Security: Introduced a layered security model with Cloud-to-Cloud backup for Microsoft 365 data and server backups, ensuring off-platform protection. Deployed Endpoint Protection for advanced antivirus and malware defence. Configured MFA and Conditional Access to safeguard sensitive data and prevent unauthorised access.
  • Efficiency: Rolled out RMM for proactive monitoring, asset tracking, and remote support. Replaced outdated hardware with new laptops, servers, switches, and access points. Implemented automated patching and antivirus updates to maintain compliance without administrative overhead.

The results

The merger was completed smoothly, and Adferiad now operates on a unified, secure IT platform designed for scalability and compliance. Staff can work productively from any location, supported by Microsoft 365 and Teams Telephony. Cybersecurity posture has been significantly strengthened, with layered protection, proactive monitoring, and verified backups ensuring resilience against threats.

Most importantly, Adferiad achieved Cyber Essentials Plus certification, providing third-party assurance of its security maturity, a critical requirement for funding and a testament to its commitment to safeguarding sensitive data. With predictable costs and ongoing expert support, the charity is positioned for sustainable growth and continued service delivery to vulnerable communities.

“Having completed the work, a testament to its success was supported by the assessor for CyberEssentials+ who complimented us on the maturity of our IT Infrastructure. This is especially important for us as CyberEssentials+ is a key requirement for funding, as well as a measure of how seriously we take the security and confidentiality of our data.”
